Prime Minister Modi posted a tweet on X on November 4, condemning the anti-Hindu violence at a Hindu temple in Brampton, Canada.
"I strongly condemn the planned attack on a Hindu temple in Canada. The cowardly attempts to intimidate our diplomats are equally appalling. Such acts of violence will never weaken India's resolve. We hope the Canadian government will ensure justice and uphold the rule of law," he said.
This is the first time that Prime Minister Modi has directly and publicly addressed the situation in Canada. Moreover, this statement is important for the following reasons:
Modi has linked the Brampton attack to the larger ecosystem in Canada that supports and nurtures the Khalistan ideology. The Canadian government is also involved in this system.
In previous cases, Khalistan activists in Canada put up posters calling for violence against Indian diplomats. Some posters even called for the execution of senior Indian diplomats in Canada.
The Canadian government tried to frame Indian diplomats for Nijjar's murder. Khalistan activists tried to do that by threatening physical and fatal harm. 'Cowardly attempts to intimidate our diplomats are equally appalling'. This phrase from Modi's statement is crucial as it comes two weeks after India recalled the High Commissioner from Canada. This comes after Canada informed India that the Indian High Commissioner and other diplomats were 'persons of interest' in the investigation into the killing of Khalistan terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian soil.
The Indian Prime Minister indicated that in India's view the actions of the Canadian government and the defiance of Khalistan activists are the same issue, avoiding specifics, referring only to 'cowardly attempts to intimidate our diplomats'. the Brampton temple attack is also linked to the Canadian government because it was carried out by a group that nurtured and protected the Canadian government and infiltrated all levels of it.
