The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday criticized Congress leader Rahul Gandhi following accusations of physical altercations with two BJP MPs during a protest at the Parliament. The controversy has escalated tensions between the ruling and opposition parties, with BJP leaders calling Gandhi’s actions unbecoming of a parliamentary leader.
Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan addressed the media, expressing disappointment over the Congress leadership’s failure to apologize for the incident. “Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and MP Rahul Gandhi held a press conference today. We were hopeful they would apologize for their misconduct in Parliament, but they did not,” Chouhan stated.
According to Chouhan, Rahul Gandhi intentionally disrupted a protest staged by BJP leaders at the Makar Dwar entrance, despite being advised by security officials to use an alternative route. “Rahul Gandhi behaved like a goon. He began pushing and shoving. Our elderly MP, Pratap Sarangi, was seriously injured in the incident,” Chouhan alleged.
Sarangi, 69, was reportedly admitted to the ICU with head injuries and remains under treatment, according to Dr. Ajay Shukla, Medical Superintendent of Delhi’s Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. Another BJP MP, Mukesh Rajput, also sustained head injuries during the altercation.
Nagaland MP Phangnon Konyak further accused Gandhi of inappropriate behavior, claiming he threatened and pushed her during the incident. “I was protesting peacefully near the Makar Dwar staircase. Rahul Gandhi came very close, shouted at me, and made me feel extremely uncomfortable. Such behavior is unbecoming of a Leader of Opposition,” Konyak stated. She has since lodged a formal complaint with the Speaker of the Rajya Sabha.
Chouhan condemned the events, questioning, “Will physical power replace logic in Parliament? The treatment of our Adivasi MP Phangnon Konyak is deeply painful. She approached the Speaker in tears to report the incident.”
In a press conference earlier in the day, Rahul Gandhi denied the allegations, instead accusing BJP MPs of obstructing opposition members from entering the Parliament complex.
“The Union Home Minister’s actions reveal his mindset. We demanded his apology and resignation, but he has refused,” Gandhi said, according to PTI. He further alleged that BJP MPs blocked opposition members near the Ambedkar statue, preventing their entry into the House.
“They have insulted Dr. B.R. Ambedkar by their actions, and the Union Home Minister must resign,” Gandhi asserted.
The incident marks a new low in the already strained relations between the BJP and Congress, as both sides trade accusations of misconduct and impropriety. While the BJP demands accountability from Rahul Gandhi, the Congress continues to press for the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, accusing the ruling party of obstructing democratic processes.
As the controversy unfolds, parliamentary decorum and the credibility of both parties remain under scrutiny. The Speaker of the Rajya Sabha is expected to review complaints and take appropriate action to address the allegations.
