New Delhi: BJP MP Phangnon Konyak from Nagaland expressed her discomfort in Rajya Sabha, alleging that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi approached her closely and shouted during a protest in the Parliament premises on Thursday. The protest was led by MPs of the INDIA Bloc against Home Minister Amit Shah's remarks on Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.
Speaking about the incident, Konyak stated, "I say this with a heavy heart. Today’s protest was meant to be peaceful. I was standing just below the Gandhi statue. Something happened that left me deeply disappointed. Rahul Gandhi came close to me and shouted. I genuinely felt uneasy. I believe this behavior is unbecoming of a leader of the opposition. It’s not that I cannot defend myself, but this act was truly inappropriate."
Following the incident, Konyak submitted a formal notice to Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar, seeking protection. She remarked, "I feel disheartened by what happened today. As a woman member of Parliament, I seek the Chairman's support on this matter."
Konyak reiterated her discomfort, emphasizing the incident left her feeling "very uncomfortable," and expressed her disappointment over what she described as inappropriate behavior by a senior opposition leader during what was supposed to be a peaceful protest.
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju demanded an apology from Rahul Gandhi and the Congress party, accusing them of creating an environment of discomfort for a woman MP and causing injuries to other members during the protest. Rijiju stated that such behavior was unacceptable and unbecoming of the opposition.
The protests, centered around Union Home Minister Amit Shah's comments on Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, escalated tensions between the ruling party and the opposition. During the demonstrations, a scuffle reportedly broke out, resulting in injuries to two BJP MPs.
The incident has further intensified the political friction in Parliament, with calls for accountability and a renewed emphasis on maintaining decorum and mutual respect in parliamentary proceedings.
