The Mahayuti alliance is set to form the next government in Maharashtra, but the official announcement of the Chief Minister's name is still pending. However, a senior BJP leader revealed on Sunday that Devendra Fadnavis has been finalized for the state's top post. Fadnavis is expected to be elected as the legislature party leader in a meeting scheduled for December 2 or 3.
Caretaker Chief Minister Eknath Shinde reiterated his support for the BJP's leadership decision, stating that the allies will finalize government formation through consensus. Shinde, who recently fell ill during a visit to Satara, assured reporters he is recovering well. Amid speculation, there are suggestions that his son, Shrikant Shinde, might be considered for the Deputy Chief Minister position, while the Shiv Sena faction seeks the Home portfolio.
The swearing-in ceremony for the new government has been scheduled for December 5 at Azad Maidan, according to BJP state president Chandrashekhar Bawankule.
Meanwhile, the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) criticized the Mahayuti alliance for delaying the government formation process. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray remarked, “The Mahayuti allies never expected to return to power and lacked a plan for leadership and council positions, causing unnecessary delays.”
In the recent assembly elections, the BJP emerged as the largest party in the 280-member assembly, securing 132 seats. Its allies, the Shiv Sena faction led by Eknath Shinde and the NCP faction led by Ajit Pawar, won 57 and 41 seats, respectively.
