Tensions escalated as protesting farmers, marching towards Delhi to demand a legal guarantee for the minimum support price (MSP) of crops, clashed with Haryana Police on Friday. Several farmers, including leaders from the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) and the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) (SKM-NP), sustained injuries due to tear gas shelling.
The Haryana Police cited a prohibitory order under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and intervened to stop the farmers from advancing further. In response, the unions decided to recall the group of 101 farmers leading the march.
Restrictions and Resistance
In Ambala district, the administration imposed a ban on unlawful assemblies of five or more people. Despite this, a group of farmers, carrying union flags, dismantled barricades erected by security personnel on the Ghaggar River bridge.
Adding to the unrest, the Haryana government suspended mobile internet and bulk SMS services in 11 villages of Ambala district, including Dangdehri, Lohgarh, Manakpur, and Kakru. The suspension, effective until December 9, aims to curb communication among protesters.
Unified Demand for MSP
Farmers gathered under the banners of SKM-NP and KMM have reiterated their core demand: a legal guarantee from the central government to ensure the minimum support price for crops. The protest highlights the ongoing tension between agricultural unions and the government over policies affecting farmers' livelihoods.
