A chemical tanker accident on the Ahmedabad-Rajkot highway in Gujarat late last night claimed at least two lives and sparked a massive fire that engulfed multiple vehicles. The incident bears stark similarities to last week's tragic LPG tanker fire on the Jaipur-Ajmer highway in Rajasthan, which resulted in 19 fatalities.
Visuals from the Ahmedabad-Rajkot accident, shared by news agency PTI, depict a fiery scene with several vehicles ablaze and fire tenders battling to contain the flames. Details of the incident are still emerging as authorities work to assess the damage and identify the victims.
Meanwhile, the death toll in the December 20 LPG tanker fire on the Jaipur-Ajmer highway rose to 19 on Thursday, as another victim succumbed to severe burn injuries at Jaipur’s Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital.
The latest victim, 28-year-old Lalaram, sustained 60% burns and had been on ventilator support since the accident. SMS hospital superintendent Dr. Sushil Bhati confirmed the death, noting that 11 individuals are still receiving treatment, with a few expected to be discharged soon.
Lalaram, a security guard at an IT company in Jaipur’s Mahindra SEZ, was en route to work when the accident occurred. According to his friend Ramavtar, Lalaram had recently moved to the Kanota area on the Agra highway from Sanganer.
“He was on his motorcycle, heading for his morning shift, when he got trapped in the fire,” Ramavtar told PTI. Lalaram’s body has been shifted to the hospital’s mortuary for post-mortem examination.
The Ahmedabad-Rajkot chemical tanker accident comes just days after the Jaipur LPG tanker tragedy, which turned a highway stretch into an inferno and caused widespread devastation. These incidents underscore the critical need for stricter safety measures and enforcement to prevent such catastrophic accidents on Indian highways.
Authorities are investigating both accidents to determine their causes and implement measures to avoid similar occurrences in the future.
