Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is scheduled to visit Moscow on January 17 to meet with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, according to Russia’s RIA news agency. During the visit, the two leaders are expected to formalize a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement. The announcement was made on Thursday by Iranian Ambassador to Russia, Kazem Jalali, as reported by RIA.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
Pezeshkian’s upcoming trip follows his visit to Russia in October, where he attended the BRICS summit in Kazan. At the time, the Kremlin described the relationship between Iran and Russia as “on the rise” and anticipated it evolving into a “comprehensive strategic partnership.”
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov confirmed in late October that the treaty outlining this partnership was under preparation. Lavrov highlighted that the agreement would facilitate enhanced cooperation in various domains, including defense.
Geopolitical Implications
The growing collaboration between Moscow and Tehran has drawn scrutiny from Western nations, particularly the United States and its allies. They have accused Iran of supplying drones, missiles, and related military components to Russia for use in the Ukraine conflict. Both Moscow and Tehran have firmly denied these allegations, asserting that no such transfers have occurred.
Earlier this month, Putin and Pezeshkian held a phone conversation regarding developments in Syria, particularly the advance of jihadist forces toward Damascus. While both nations were staunch allies of former Syrian President Bashar Assad, neither chose to intervene following Assad’s decision to step down peacefully.
Infrastructure Collaboration
Ahead of the Moscow visit, Russian Deputy Prime Minister for Transport, Vitaly Savelyev, met with Pezeshkian in Tehran. The discussions focused on the Rasht-Astara railway project, a significant infrastructure initiative that aims to connect rail networks across Azerbaijan, Iran, Russia, and India. Once completed, the project is expected to bolster regional connectivity and economic collaboration.
Pezeshkian’s visit underscores the deepening ties between Iran and Russia amid shifting geopolitical dynamics, signaling a new phase of strategic alignment.
