North Korea is reportedly preparing to deploy additional troops and military equipment, including suicide drones, to support Russia's ongoing war against Ukraine, according to South Korea’s military intelligence.
South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS), citing intelligence assessments, indicated that Pyongyang has already sent thousands of troops to Russia, with casualty estimates reaching approximately 1,100, as reported by Yonhap News Agency.
“A comprehensive evaluation of multiple intelligence sources suggests that North Korea is preparing to either rotate or increase its deployment of troops in Russia. Currently, it is also supplying 240-millimeter rocket launchers and 170-millimeter self-propelled artillery,” the JCS stated.
In addition to artillery, North Korea appears to be advancing its development and supply of suicide drones, which were first showcased during leader Kim Jong-un’s inspection in November. These drones are part of the North’s broader strategy to modernize its military capabilities and gain practical warfare experience.
North Korea’s strengthening military alliance with Russia represents a significant shift in the geopolitical landscape. Pyongyang's provision of troops and advanced weaponry could be aimed at bolstering its conventional forces—long deemed inferior to South Korea’s—and gaining combat experience from the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Last month, North Korean state media highlighted Kim Jong-un's call for the mass production of suicide drones, describing them as cost-effective and pivotal in modern warfare.
This partnership with Moscow may also increase threats to South Korea, as North Korea accelerates its efforts to modernize its arsenal. The JCS noted recent signs of heightened military activity along the heavily fortified Korean border, where up to 10,000 North Korean soldiers have been dispatched to install barriers and electrified fencing.
Looking ahead, the JCS warned of possible strategic provocations from North Korea, potentially aligned with Moscow’s interests. These could include the test-launch of intermediate-range hypersonic missiles or even intercontinental ballistic missiles, as well as a possible nuclear test to enhance Pyongyang’s leverage in future negotiations with the United States.
Additionally, North Korea’s campaign of sending balloons loaded with trash into South Korea, purportedly in retaliation against propaganda leaflets flown by South Korean activists, may intensify. Thousands of such balloons have been launched since late May, heightening tensions along the border.
“With Russia's backing, North Korea is likely to escalate its strategic provocations in 2024, seeking to assert its influence and bargaining power on the global stage,” a South Korean military official cautioned.
The deepening military collaboration between Pyongyang and Moscow underscores the evolving threats to regional stability and the broader international order. As North Korea leverages its relationship with Russia to strengthen its military and gain combat experience, neighboring nations, particularly South Korea, face mounting security challenges.
The developments highlight the importance of sustained vigilance and cooperation among allied nations to counter potential provocations and maintain regional stability in the face of an increasingly assertive North Korea.
