Russia Grants Political Asylum to Former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad

Russia announced on Monday that it has granted political asylum to Bashar al-Assad, the former Syrian president who fled his country after resigning amid a dramatic turn of events. According to the Associated Press, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed the decision, stating that President Vladimir Putin extended asylum to Assad following the collapse of his regime.

Peskov refrained from disclosing Assad’s exact location and clarified that there are no immediate plans for Putin to meet with the former Syrian leader.

Assad’s resignation and departure marked the end of his 13-year rule, which began to unravel after a swift and unexpected rebel offensive concluded his hold on power. This development comes more than a decade after his government’s violent crackdown on anti-government protests sparked Syria’s devastating civil war.

In a speech delivered at the historic Umayyad Mosque in Damascus, Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, leader of the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), hailed the rebel victory as a transformative moment. “This victory, my brothers, is historic for the region,” al-Jolani said, reflecting on the rebels' success in toppling Assad after years of conflict.
