Suspect Detained in Donetsk for Alleged Bombing of Russian Officer’s Car

A man has been apprehended in Donetsk on allegations of planting a bomb under the car of a Russian officer, reportedly on behalf of Ukrainian intelligence, according to a statement by Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB).

The explosion, which occurred last week in the city of Donetsk, part of Russia’s self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic, resulted in the officer’s death and serious injuries to his wife. The FSB announced on Sunday that the suspect, a local resident, was arrested at his home following a coordinated operation by the FSB, the Interior Ministry, the National Guard, and Russia’s Investigative Committee.

Details of the Incident

The agency alleges the suspect placed an improvised explosive device beneath the officer’s SUV and later detonated it remotely when the officer and his wife entered the vehicle. Surveillance footage released by the FSB shows the suspect attaching the bomb and the subsequent detonation.

In a video released alongside the statement, the detained man admitted to collaborating with Ukrainian special services. “After establishing contact with Ukrainian intelligence, I planted and detonated the bomb on December 9. I know that a man died and his wife was injured. I regret my actions,” he said. The suspect also acknowledged feeling used by his handlers, adding, “I understand that I am expendable. Everyone working with Ukrainian special services will be detained and punished accordingly.”

Financial Motivation and Ongoing Investigation

The Investigative Committee disclosed to RIA Novosti that the suspect was offered $10,000 by Ukrainian operatives to carry out the assassination. The FSB confirmed that investigations are ongoing to identify others involved in the attack.

Similar Incidents

The arrest follows another high-profile case last month in Sevastopol, Crimea, where two individuals were detained in connection with the killing of Captain 1st Rank Valery Trankovsky, deputy commander of the Azov branch of the Russian Black Sea Fleet. Trankovsky’s car was targeted in a similar bombing while he was en route to work. The suspects in that case confessed to working with Ukrainian intelligence.

These incidents highlight the growing intensity of covert operations in the ongoing conflict, with both sides accusing each other of orchestrating targeted attacks. As investigations continue, they underscore the broader implications of espionage and targeted violence in the region.
