U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is set to unveil additional funding for humanitarian assistance and initiatives to bolster civil society in Sudan during a United Nations Security Council meeting on Thursday. The announcement comes amid a devastating conflict that has claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced millions.
Deputy U.S. Representative to the United Nations, Ned Price, confirmed that Blinken would chair the meeting, which will focus on humanitarian aid and the protection of civilians. Price emphasized that the announcements aim to not only address immediate needs but also support Sudan’s eventual transition back to democracy.
“Sudan, unfortunately, risks becoming a forgotten conflict,” Price remarked. “Part of the reason the Secretary chose to convene this signature event is to ensure the crisis remains in the international spotlight.”
Humanitarian Crisis in Sudan
The conflict, which erupted in April 2023, stems from a power struggle between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). More than 12 million people have been forced to flee their homes, creating a severe humanitarian crisis. United Nations agencies have struggled to deliver aid due to ongoing hostilities and logistical challenges.
Although U.S.-mediated talks in Geneva earlier this year failed to secure a ceasefire due to the army's non-participation, the negotiations did yield commitments from both sides to improve humanitarian access.
Continued U.S. Commitment
Price reiterated the United States' determination to work with international allies and Sudanese stakeholders to improve aid delivery and achieve a cessation of hostilities. He underlined the urgency of these efforts, particularly as President Joe Biden’s term draws to a close next month.
“We are committed to leaving no stone unturned in our efforts,” Price stated. “This includes collaborating with allies, partners, and Sudanese stakeholders on key priorities: ensuring humanitarian access, delivering aid, and ultimately paving the way for a cessation of hostilities.”
Path to Stability
The war’s origins lie in the derailment of a planned transition to civilian rule, underscoring the broader political challenges facing Sudan. The U.S. government’s renewed focus on the conflict highlights its commitment to addressing both the immediate humanitarian needs and the long-term goal of restoring democratic governance in the country.
Blinken’s announcements are expected to reinforce the international community’s role in supporting Sudan during one of its most challenging crises in recent history.
