AAP Leaders Denied Entry to Delhi CM's Residence Amid "Sheesh Mahal" Controversy

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders Sanjay Singh and Saurabh Bhardwaj were barred from entering the Delhi Chief Minister's official residence at 6, Flagstaff Road on Tuesday. The leaders had invited media personnel to join them for a tour of the property in an attempt to counter the BJP’s allegations that the bungalow was transformed into a lavish “Sheesh Mahal” during Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s tenure.

Barricades and a heavy police presence blocked access to the premises, preventing the leaders and the accompanying media from entering. When questioned about permission, Singh and Bhardwaj argued that they should not need authorization to visit the chief minister’s residence.

“Who has instructed you to stop us? I am a minister conducting an inspection. How can you deny me entry, and on whose orders? Was this directed by the Lieutenant Governor? He is the only authority above my position,” Bhardwaj was heard asking an official.

BJP’s “Sheesh Mahal” Allegations and AAP’s Counter

Addressing the media earlier, Bhardwaj said, “We will visit the chief minister’s residence as promised to investigate claims made by the BJP, including a ‘golden commode,’ a swimming pool, and a mini-bar. If such allegations are true, they must be investigated.”

The BJP has accused AAP of misusing public funds for the renovation of the 6, Flagstaff Road bungalow during the COVID-19 pandemic. Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva alleged that several valuable items, including a “golden commode,” went missing after the property was vacated by Kejriwal.

AAP leaders also proposed a visit to the Prime Minister’s residence, dubbed the “Raj Mahal” by AAP, claiming it was constructed at an exorbitant cost of ₹2,700 crore. “Both properties were built with taxpayers’ money. If allegations of misappropriation exist, they must be thoroughly investigated,” Bhardwaj said.

Media Tour Challenge and Election Campaign

The controversy has become a focal point of the BJP’s Delhi assembly election campaign. AAP, in response, has challenged the BJP to allow a media inspection of the Prime Minister’s residence to substantiate claims about its cost and amenities.

“The BJP’s accusations are baseless. Let them open the Prime Minister’s residence for a media tour, and we will show them the reality of the Chief Minister’s bungalow,” Singh stated.

The 6, Flagstaff Road bungalow continues to serve as a political flashpoint, with both parties trading barbs over alleged extravagance and the misuse of public funds.
