CHENNAI: AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami has criticized the ruling DMK government, accusing it of imposing heavy tax burdens on the public over the past four years and failing to address the pressing issue of inflation.
Rising Commodity Prices and Increased Taxes
Highlighting the steep rise in commodity prices since the DMK came to power, Palaniswami alleged that the government has failed to implement effective measures to curb inflation.
"The Stalin-led government has increased the power tariff three times, along with property and drinking water taxes, placing a significant financial burden on the people," Palaniswami stated in a press release.
He further alleged that the deterioration of law and order in the state has exacerbated the challenges faced by the public.
Contradictions in DMK’s Claims on Poll Promises
Palaniswami also questioned Chief Minister M.K. Stalin's claims regarding the fulfillment of election promises. While Stalin recently asserted that his government had implemented 90% of the poll assurances made during the 2021 Assembly election campaign, the AIADMK leader pointed out a contradiction.
"During a government event in Sivaganga on January 22, Stalin admitted that 116 out of 505 promises remain unfulfilled. This exposes the inconsistency in his statements," Palaniswami remarked.
He also criticized the delayed rollout of the Magalir Urimai Thogai scheme, which provides monthly financial assistance to women.
"This scheme was implemented 28 months after the DMK came to power and only after sustained pressure from the AIADMK," he claimed, contrasting it with the Congress government in Karnataka, which initiated financial aid for women immediately after assuming office.
Response to CM’s Revenue Deficit Remarks
Responding to Stalin's remarks that the AIADMK government left Tamil Nadu in a revenue-deficit state, Palaniswami defended his tenure. He claimed that during the AIADMK regime from 2011 to 2021, the government fulfilled 1,658 out of 1,704 promises made in the Assembly, demonstrating a high rate of delivery.
DMK’s Perspective
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Stalin, speaking at an event in Sivaganga, emphasized his government’s focus on welfare and development despite various challenges.
"The DMK is steering Tamil Nadu on a path of progress while implementing a range of welfare initiatives," the Chief Minister said.
As the state gears up for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the political tussle between the AIADMK and DMK is expected to intensify, with both parties presenting competing narratives of governance and accountability.
