Kochi: In an ongoing crackdown on illegal immigration, police have arrested four Bangladeshi nationals from different parts of Ernakulam district for unlawfully residing in India.
On Tuesday, two men—Mohammed Baljith (31) and Muhammad Babu (36)—were apprehended from Vennala, Kochi. The duo, both hailing from Khulna district in Bangladesh, had been working as junk collectors in Vennala and Palarivattom for several years. Following a tip-off, police conducted a verification check at their rented residence. Initially, they presented Aadhaar cards—Baljith’s showing a Bengaluru address and Babu’s a New Delhi address—but further investigation revealed they were using Bangladeshi mobile numbers. Under interrogation, they admitted to illegally entering India and acquiring forged documents through agents in West Bengal.
In a separate operation on Thursday, two Bangladeshi women—Kobitiba (22) and Rubina Sheikh (19)—were arrested from Kodanadu in the Ernakulam rural police limits. Police reports indicate that they had illegally crossed the border from West Bengal and later traveled to Bengaluru, where they obtained Aadhaar cards with the help of an agent.
Investigation Widens Amid Rising Arrests
All four individuals have been booked under the Foreigners Act and the Indian Passport Act. They were produced before the court and remanded in judicial custody.
These arrests are part of a broader effort to curb illegal immigration, as authorities have detained 10 Bangladeshi nationals in the Ernakulam district in the past two weeks alone. In light of the increasing cases, police have decided to extend their investigation to West Bengal to track down the agents facilitating illegal border crossings and providing fake identification documents.
Law enforcement agencies remain vigilant and are intensifying efforts to dismantle human trafficking networks and unauthorized immigration routes.
