Delhi Assembly Elections: Atishi Criticizes BJP, Alleges Ramesh Bidhuri Tipped as CM Candidate

Delhi Chief Minister Atishi launched a sharp attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday, alleging that the party has decided to project Ramesh Bidhuri as its chief ministerial candidate for the upcoming Delhi assembly elections. Atishi, who assumed the role of Chief Minister after Arvind Kejriwal stepped down following his incarceration last year, claimed this was a "reward" for Bidhuri's contentious behavior within the party.

Allegations Against BJP’s CM Choice

Speaking to the media, Atishi stated, “Reliable sources have revealed that during the Central Election Committee (CEC) meeting of what I call the ‘Gaali-Galouch Party,’ it was decided that Ramesh Bidhuri will be the CM face for Delhi. This evening’s Parliamentary Committee meeting is expected to finalize this decision.”

Highlighting the contrasting leadership styles, Atishi said, “Delhiites now have two choices: an educated and hardworking leader like Arvind Kejriwal or an abusive leader like Ramesh Bidhuri.”

Atishi, who is contesting the Kalkaji seat against BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri and Congress’s Alka Lamba, accused the BJP of failing to officially announce its chief ministerial candidate, despite the polls being less than a month away.

BJP's Recent Controversies

The BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri has faced criticism for several controversial remarks. During a recent campaign rally, Bidhuri questioned Atishi’s surname change from "Marlena" to "Singh," alleging it reflected poorly on her character. "This Marlena became Singh. She changed her name and, metaphorically, her father. This speaks volumes about the character of AAP,” he said.

Bidhuri also sparked outrage with comments about Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, drawing parallels to a controversial statement by former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav. Promising smooth roads in Kalkaji, he said, “We will build all roads in Kalkaji like the cheeks of Priyanka Gandhi. Lalu couldn’t deliver on his promise of making roads like Hema Malini’s cheeks, but we will deliver.”

The remarks were met with widespread criticism, forcing Bidhuri to retract his statements.

Voting for Delhi’s 70 constituencies, including 12 reserved for Scheduled Castes, is scheduled for February 5, with results to be announced on February 8. According to the updated electoral roll, Delhi has 1,55,24,858 registered voters, reflecting a 1.09% increase since October 2024.

With the election date nearing, the political atmosphere in the national capital is heating up, as parties focus on campaign strategies and voter outreach. Atishi's criticism of BJP reflects the intensifying battle between the Aam Aadmi Party and its principal rival for control of the Delhi government.
