Fire Breaks Out at Maha Kumbh Mela: 40 Huts, 6 Tents Destroyed, No Major Casualties Reported

Prayagraj, January 20: A fire broke out at the Maha Kumbh Mela on Sunday, reducing at least 40 thatched huts and six tents to ashes. Authorities confirmed there were no major casualties, and the situation has been brought under control.

The fire, which erupted around 4:10 PM in the kitchen area of the Geeta Press camp near Karpatriji’s camp in Sector 19, quickly spread to nearby structures. The affected area lies between the old and new railway bridges in the Mahakumbh Mela zone. Officials attributed the blaze to a gas leak from a small cylinder while tea was being prepared.

Emergency response teams, including 15 fire tenders, police, and administrative personnel, were promptly dispatched to the scene. The blaze was fully extinguished by 5:00 PM. According to Chief Fire Officer (Kumbh Mela) Pramod Sharma, “Everyone was safely evacuated, and the fire was contained swiftly.”

Additional Director General (Prayagraj), Bhanu Bhaskar, highlighted the use of modern firefighting equipment to control the situation efficiently. As a precautionary measure, the Mela administration removed all gas cylinders from the vicinity to prevent further incidents.

While no fatalities were reported, one individual sustained a leg injury during the evacuation and fell unconscious. He has been admitted to Swaroop Medical College in Prayagraj and is in stable condition.

High-Level Response

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who was in Prayagraj at the time, visited the affected site to assess the situation. He later briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the incident.

Massive Event Underway

The 45-day Maha Kumbh, which commenced on January 13, is expected to attract approximately 40 crore pilgrims. The sprawling event has set up 1.6 lakh tents and 50,000 shops across the venue. The mela will conclude on February 26.

Officials reiterated their commitment to ensuring safety and security at the event and assured the public that measures are being taken to prevent any recurrence of such incidents.
