Baerbock is scheduled to meet Ahmed al-Sharaa, the leader of Syria's transitional government, signaling a potential new chapter in relations between Syria and Europe.
"This trip — together with my French counterpart and on behalf of the EU — is a clear signal to the Syrians: a new political beginning between Europe and Syria, between Germany and Syria, is possible," Baerbock stated in a press release issued by the German Foreign Ministry ahead of her departure.
Baerbock emphasized the symbolic nature of the visit, describing it as an "outstretched hand" of reconciliation and cooperation. The trip follows the dramatic ousting of President Bashar al-Assad on December 8, when rebel forces seized control of Damascus, ending more than 13 years of civil war and the Assad family's decades-long grip on power.
"We share a vision that resonates with millions of Syrians: for Syria to reclaim its place as a respected member of the international community," she added.
This visit underscores Europe's readiness to support Syria’s transitional government and its aspirations for rebuilding and reintegration on the global stage. The discussions in Damascus are expected to focus on fostering stability, humanitarian aid, and long-term political solutions to restore peace and prosperity to the war-torn nation.
