The Israeli Air Force conducted a targeted strike overnight, resulting in the death of Hussam Shahwan, the head of Hamas’s internal security apparatus, in the southern Gaza Strip, according to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
The IDF reported that Shahwan had been hiding among civilians in the humanitarian zone on the outskirts of Khan Younis. Palestinian media outlets, including Hamas-controlled Al-Aqsa TV, described Shahwan as the deputy chief of Hamas's police force. These reports also claimed that the police chief, Mahmoud Salah, was killed in the same strike, along with nine others, including women and children. However, the IDF did not confirm Salah’s death in its statement.
The IDF further outlined that under Shahwan’s leadership, Hamas's internal security apparatus was responsible for gathering intelligence on Israeli military operations in Gaza. The group was also accused of conducting violent interrogations, violating human rights, and persecuting dissenters.
In its statement, the IDF emphasized the precautions taken to minimize civilian casualties, including the use of precision munitions, aerial surveillance, and comprehensive intelligence gathering. The IDF condemned Hamas for exploiting civilian infrastructure as a shield for its terror activities, asserting that the group consistently violates international law.
