India Secure Dominant Win Over Sri Lanka in ICC Women’s U19 T20 World Cup Group Stage Finale

Bayuemas Oval, Kuala Lumpur: The India Women’s U19 cricket team concluded their Group A campaign with a commanding 60-run victory over Sri Lanka in the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup 2025. This win cements India’s position as the top team in their group, with three victories from as many matches.

Trisha Gongadi Stars for India

India posted a competitive 118 runs, largely thanks to Trisha Gongadi’s pivotal 49-run knock under pressure. Despite Sri Lanka’s disciplined bowling attack, led by their spinners, Gongadi anchored the innings to ensure India had a defendable total. Her ability to stabilize the innings earned her the Player of the Match accolade.

In response, Sri Lanka’s chase crumbled in the face of India’s disciplined bowling. Seamers Shabnam Md Shakil and Joshitha V J struck early, reducing Sri Lanka to 12/5 within the Powerplay. The spinners then capitalized on the momentum, restricting Sri Lanka to just 58/9 in their 20 overs.

Captain’s Reflections

Victorious Indian skipper Niki Prasad praised her team’s intent and resilience:
“Sri Lanka bowled really well, but our batters showed great character to post a competitive score. The bowlers were confident of defending it, and we always aim to give more than 100% in every game.”

Sri Lanka’s captain, Manudi Nanayakkara, acknowledged her team’s batting struggles:
“Our shot selection in the Powerplay let us down. The bowlers and fielders performed admirably, but we need to improve with the bat in the Super Six stage.”

Group A Standings and Super Six Implications

With this victory, India finishes atop Group A, followed by Sri Lanka and the West Indies, who also qualified for the Super Six stage. Sri Lanka will take heart from their bowling performance but will aim for a stronger showing with the bat in the upcoming matches.

The Super Six round begins on January 25, with teams divided into two groups. Group A qualifiers will face two teams from Group D, while Group B teams will compete against two qualifiers from Group C. Meanwhile, the bottom four teams will play positional playoffs on January 24.

Looking Ahead

India’s dominant display throughout the group stage reinforces their status as defending champions. With a well-rounded bowling attack and a confident batting lineup, they will be a formidable force in the Super Six stage.
