Sajan Cheriyan (Devasya Padanilam), an Indian expat who had relocated from Cork to Cavan, Ireland, passed away at the age of 49. He had been battling cancer and undergoing treatment for several months.
Sajan Devasia Cheriyan, Crossreagh, Ballyhaise, Co. Cavan breathed his last in the early hours of Friday, January 3, 2025, at Cavan General Hospital, where he was employed under Ireland’s Health Department. He is survived by his wife, Smitha and a dear father to Cerone. Sadly missed by his father Cherian Padanilam, his late mother Marykutty Cheriyan, brother Saiju (UK), sister Sanu Mol (Australia)
A vibrant presence in the social and cultural life of Ireland’s Malayali community, Sajan was a founding member of the Cork Pravasi Malayali Association and served in various leadership roles over the years. He also co-founded "Sharing Care," the first charity initiative led by Malayali expats in Ireland, and served as its inaugural secretary.
Sajan was equally active in the spiritual community, serving as the first secretary of the Malayali Catholic Community in Cork. He also held the positions of founding secretary and headmaster at St. Joseph’s Sunday School in Cork, contributing significantly to the cultural and spiritual lives of the diaspora.
Reposing at Lakelands Funeral Home, Dublin Road, Cavan (H12 RF78) on Sunday 5th January from 5:30pm – 8:30pm. Funeral to arrive in the Cathedral of Saint Patrick and Saint Felim (45 Farnham St, Keadew, Cavan, H12 FD71) on Monday 6th January 2025 for funeral mass at 11:30am. Interment afterwards in Cullies Cemetery.
