Judicial Commission Begins Probe Into Maha Kumbh Stampede in Prayagraj

A three-member judicial commission has commenced its investigation into the tragic stampede that took place on January 29 during the Mauni Amavasya bathing ritual at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj.

The commission, led by Justice (Retd.) Harsh Kumar, arrived at its office in Janpath, Lucknow, on Thursday and immediately took charge of the inquiry.

"Given the gravity of the incident, we have assumed charge within hours of the commission's formation," said Justice Kumar. "Although we have been allotted a month to complete the investigation, we will make every effort to expedite the process." He also confirmed that the commission would soon visit Prayagraj for an on-ground assessment.

Government Response and Preventive Measures

Following the incident, Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) Prashant Kumar, Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Singh, and other senior officials conducted an on-site inspection.

Speaking to the media, DGP Prashant Kumar said, "The state government has constituted a judicial inquiry commission to investigate the incident. Our immediate focus is ensuring a well-organized and safe Basant Panchami ‘Amrit Snan.’ We have also visited the affected site and met the injured at the medical college. Thankfully, none of the admitted individuals are in critical condition, though some have sustained fractures. We are committed to enhancing safety measures to prevent such occurrences in the future."

Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Singh provided an update on the injured, stating, "Currently, 36 individuals are receiving treatment. They are being well cared for, and arrangements have been made for their attendants. The injured hail from various locations, including Deoria, Delhi, and Bihar, and their families have been informed. While none are in serious condition, some have sustained fractures, requiring approximately three weeks for full recovery."

Casualties and Investigation Progress

The stampede, which occurred during the highly significant Mauni Amavasya bathing ritual, claimed 30 lives and left 60 others injured. The judicial commission’s findings are expected to play a crucial role in determining the cause of the tragedy and implementing stronger safety protocols for future events.

With preparations underway for Basant Panchami, authorities have assured the public of enhanced crowd management and safety measures to prevent further mishaps.
