Pakistan: Security Forces Neutralize Militants, Elders Demand Action on Kidnappings

Security forces in Pakistan conducted a successful intelligence-based operation in the Maddi area, resulting in the elimination of five militants and injuries to two others, according to an official statement by the military’s media wing, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

The ISPR identified the deceased ringleader as Shafiullah, also known as Shafi, and confirmed that security forces effectively targeted the militants’ location. Weapons and ammunition were recovered from their possession. The statement noted that the militants were actively involved in hostile activities against security forces and the targeted killing of civilians.

Jirga Issues Ultimatum on Contractor Abductions

In a separate development, the Marwat Qaumi Jirga convened on Friday in the Dallokhel area near Lakki Marwat city, issuing a 24-hour ultimatum to the government for the recovery of 16 contractors and their driver abducted a day earlier. The workers, associated with a Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission project, were kidnapped by armed militants from the Lakki-Darra Tang road and taken to an unknown location. The abductors also set their vehicle ablaze in a forested area near the Kurrum River.

Security forces and police launched a rescue operation, recovering eight of the kidnapped individuals, while efforts to locate the remaining victims continue.

Community Leaders Demand Action

The jirga, attended by elders from the Aba Shaheedkhel and Begukhel tribes, condemned the abduction as a failure of government and law enforcement. Tribal elders urged authorities to expedite efforts to ensure the safe release of the remaining hostages.

“We have gathered with a single agenda: to express the concerns of the local population and demand the safe recovery of all kidnapped workers,” one elder stated.

Some participants proposed the formation of a committee to engage with the district administration to facilitate the recovery efforts. Elder Naseer Turab reiterated the jirga’s 24-hour deadline, warning that further actions would be decided in a subsequent meeting if the workers were not released within the timeframe.

Law and Order Concerns

The jirga expressed alarm over the deteriorating security situation, highlighting the increasing frequency of abductions, even in broad daylight. Several speakers emphasized the need for local residents to take collective measures for their safety, given the perceived inadequacy of law enforcement agencies.

Notable figures in attendance included former MNA Amirullah Marwat, MPA Johar Muhammad Khan, engineer Latifullah Khan of the Awami National Party, Inayatur Rehman of Aba Shaheedkhel jirga, and other prominent community leaders.

The jirga underscored the urgency of addressing the security challenges and called on the government to fulfill its responsibilities in ensuring peace and stability in the region.
