Panda Recycling Announces Price Hikes Amid Rising Operational Costs

Thousands of customers of Panda Recycling, the largest waste collection company in Ireland, are set to face price increases starting this week, with the adjustments significantly exceeding the current inflation rate.

The company, which serves 300,000 households and businesses, has informed its customers in north County Dublin of upcoming hikes in the half-yearly service charge, the general waste per-lift fee, and the recycling per-lift fee. These increases will take effect on Saturday, with similar adjustments expected to be announced for customers in Dublin, Cork, Galway, Meath, Wicklow, Wexford, and other regions served by Panda.

The half-yearly service charge will rise from €67.50 to €70, marking a 3.7% increase, compared to a 1.4% rise in the consumer price index over the past year. The general waste per-lift charge will see a sharper increase of 14.89%, going from €11.75 to €13.50. Recycling per-lift fees will rise by 25%, from €1 to €1.25, effective February 1, reflecting an increase that is 18 times the inflation rate.

Rising Costs Drive Price Adjustments

A spokesperson for Panda attributed the price hikes to escalating costs, particularly in recycling and labor.

“General recycling charges have risen by 50% for waste companies over the past year, and we are passing on only a portion of this cost to green bin users. Additionally, the national minimum wage increased by more than 6% in January, impacting salaries and contributing to higher operational expenses,” the spokesperson said.

However, Panda noted that brown-bin charges for organic waste would remain unchanged this year, and the pricing structure aims to encourage greater use of the brown compost bin and green recycling bin. The company stated that the overall annual increase for customers would average €20, equivalent to a 6.5% rise.

“Panda has made every effort to keep the pricing adjustment as modest as possible,” the spokesperson added.

Panda Recycling, owned by Beauparc Utilities, was acquired by Australian financial services group Macquarie in 2021. The sale reportedly provided former owner Eamon Waters with a windfall of €367 million from the €1 billion deal.

Greyhound Recycling Also Raises Prices

The announcement from Panda comes just months after rival company Greyhound Recycling implemented price increases for its 150,000 domestic customers in Dublin.

In November 2024, Greyhound introduced an additional €2.99 monthly charge, citing rising costs associated with disposal fees, levies, and changes in nationwide recycling processes.

“While general inflation has eased, many costs for businesses continue to rise,” Greyhound stated in a letter to customers. “Despite our best efforts to absorb most of these rising costs, some adjustments are now necessary to maintain the high-quality service you expect.”

The increase represents a rise of over 10%, far outpacing the current rate of inflation.

Impact on Customers

The price hikes by Panda and Greyhound Recycling have raised concerns among customers already grappling with rising household costs. While both companies emphasized efforts to minimize the impact of rising expenses, the adjustments underscore the broader challenges facing the waste management sector amidst increasing operational and regulatory costs.
