Stampede at Mahakumbh in Prayagraj Leaves Several Feared Dead, 30 Injured

A tragic stampede-like incident at the Mahakumbh, the world’s largest religious gathering, has left several people feared dead and at least 30 women injured at Sangam Ghat in Prayagraj. The incident occurred on Wednesday morning, coinciding with Mauni Amavasya, a significant bathing day for devotees. In response, the Akharas announced the cancellation of the Amrit Snan (holy dip).

Rescue Operations Underway

Local authorities swiftly mobilized police and emergency response teams at the ghat to carry out rescue operations. The injured were transported to a hospital in Sector 2, where they are currently receiving medical attention. A green corridor was created to facilitate the swift movement of ambulances and ensure immediate medical care for the injured. Hospitals across Prayagraj were put on high alert, with doctors and medical staff instructed to report for emergency duty.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reviewed the developments and called for immediate support measures. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also reached out to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, assuring full assistance from the central government.

The Mauni Amavasya bathing ritual, known as Amrit Snan, was initially suspended due to safety concerns. However, Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad President Ravindra Puri later confirmed that the ritual would take place on a smaller scale as the crowd had begun to disperse.

“Due to the excessive crowd, we had put our snan on hold. Now that the ghats are being vacated, we expect all Akharas to be able to perform the ritual today, though on a reduced scale,” Puri stated.

Cause of the Stampede

According to Special Executive Officer Akanksha Rana, the incident was triggered when a barricade at the Sangam Ghat collapsed under pressure from the massive crowd. Reports indicate that some women in the densely packed gathering began to feel suffocated, which led to panic and caused people to fall over each other.

Precautionary Measures & Crowd Control

In response to the incident, the administration implemented a crowd diversion plan, restricting entry to the Mahakumbh area. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath urged devotees to perform their holy dip at alternative ghats and avoid overcrowding the Sangam Ghat. He also appealed to the public to follow the administration’s instructions and not to believe in rumors.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, and further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.Stampede at Mahakumbh in Prayagraj Leaves Several Feared Dead, 30 Injured
