United States President Donald Trump announced that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit the White House in February, positioning Modi as one of the first world leaders to engage directly with Trump following his inauguration for a second term. The two leaders reportedly discussed several key issues, including immigration and bilateral relations, during a recent phone conversation.
“I had a long talk with him this morning, and he’s going to be coming to the White House in the next month, probably in February. We have a very good relationship with India,” President Trump stated while speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One. He also expressed confidence in Prime Minister Modi’s approach to addressing immigration concerns, highlighting India’s commitment to repatriating some 18,000 Indian nationals residing in the United States without legal status. This follows earlier reports of an agreement between India and the United States on the matter.
Last week, during a meeting with India’s External Affairs Minister, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio reiterated the importance of addressing irregular migration and enhancing cooperation on this issue. President Trump further underscored his openness to skilled legal migration, acknowledging India’s globally recognized IT talent pool.
The leaders’ telephonic exchange marks their first interaction since Trump assumed office for a second term. Discussions encompassed bilateral trade, defense, and global stability, with both sides affirming their commitment to advancing shared goals. President Trump emphasized the importance of India purchasing more American-made security equipment and fostering a balanced trade relationship.
Both leaders also reviewed pressing regional matters, including security in the Indo-Pacific, the Middle East, and Europe. According to the White House, the call was “productive,” reflecting the strong strategic partnership between the two nations.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that the two leaders have agreed to meet at the earliest mutually convenient date. Preparations for the visit are reportedly underway, with Indian and U.S. diplomats working to finalize the schedule. Prime Minister Modi last visited the United States in September to attend the Quad Leaders’ Summit in Wilmington, Delaware.
Prime Minister Modi expressed his optimism about the continued partnership in a post on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “Delighted to speak with my dear friend President Donald Trump. Congratulated him on his historic second term. We are committed to a mutually beneficial and trusted partnership. We will work together for the welfare of our people and towards global peace, prosperity, and security.”
This upcoming visit highlights the enduring strength of U.S.-India relations. While President Trump has previously criticized India on trade practices, referring to the country as a “very big abuser,” bilateral trade has remained a cornerstone of the relationship. Two-way trade between the nations surpassed $118 billion in 2023-24, with India recording a surplus of $32 billion.
Prime Minister Modi and President Trump, who enjoyed a warm rapport during Trump’s first term, appear poised to further deepen ties, ensuring that the world’s two largest democracies continue to collaborate for mutual benefit.
