Rush to Deliver Before Policy Change: Indian Couples Seek Early Births Amid Citizenship Debate

One of the key decisions in President Donald Trump's early executive orders was to end birthright citizenship in the United States. The policy, which granted citizenship to children born in the U.S. to non-American parents or those without a green card, has now been revoked. This move was in line with one of Trump's campaign promises to eliminate birthright citizenship. This decision is expected to adversely affect many, including a large number of Indian nationals.

Trump took office as President on January 20, and prior to this, doctors had raised concerns about the increasing number of cesarean deliveries in hospitals. Many Indian couples reportedly insisted on delivering their babies before January 20 to ensure their children would be granted U.S. citizenship, as revealed by Indian-American gynecologist Dr. S.D. Rama. She mentioned that about twenty couples had contacted her requesting a cesarean delivery before the policy change took effect.

There were reports prior to Trump's inauguration that he intended to end birthright citizenship. This announcement led to a rush at hospitals to expedite deliveries, with many couples hoping to give birth before January 20, as children born after this date would not automatically receive citizenship. Thousands of Indians working in the U.S. on H-1B and L1 visas, as well as many others waiting for green cards, will be directly impacted by this policy.

Dr. Rama operates a maternity clinic in New Jersey, where she notes that even patients who were several months away from their due dates contacted her. Dr. S.G. Mukkal, a Texas-based doctor, highlighted the potential complications of premature deliveries, noting that in the two days leading up to January 20, she was consulted by approximately twenty couples seeking to expedite their births.

This decision marks a significant change in U.S. immigration policy and is likely to have far-reaching consequences for many immigrant families, particularly those from countries like India.
