In a significant counter-insurgency operation, security forces recovered a large cache of arms and ammunition in the "fringe and vulnerable areas" of Manipur's Churachandpur district, which has been witnessing a surge in ethnic violence.
According to an official police statement, a coordinated search operation conducted on Tuesday across both hill and valley areas led to the recovery of six rockets, a rocket launcher, a country-made mortar (pompi), a 7.62 sniper rifle along with a sniper magazine, nine tear gas shells, and a riot control rubber bullet. Security personnel also seized three improvised explosive device (IED) shells, three helmets, and three bulletproof jackets equipped with fiber plates.
Crackdown on Militant Groups
In a separate operation on January 27, security forces apprehended two members of the banned militant outfit Kangleipak Communist Party (People’s War Group) [KCP (PWG)] from Morok Ingkhol village in Imphal East district.
As per Manipur Police, the two individuals were allegedly involved in extortion activities, targeting civilians, government officials, and business establishments across different areas of Imphal. A 9mm pistol with a magazine and seven live rounds was also recovered from their possession.
Ongoing Operations Amidst Ethnic Violence
Search operations across Manipur have intensified since ethnic violence erupted in the northeastern state in May 2023, resulting in over 250 fatalities and displacing thousands of residents.
In the past two days alone, security forces have arrested seven individuals linked to banned insurgent outfits. On Tuesday, three members of the outlawed Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL) and an active cadre of the United National Liberation Front-Koireng (UNLF-K) were apprehended near the India-Myanmar border in Tengnoupal district.
The crackdown continued on Wednesday with the arrest of two members of the proscribed People’s Liberation Army (PLA), who were allegedly involved in extortion activities in Imphal’s Paona Bazar area.
Authorities remain on high alert, intensifying counter-insurgency efforts to curb militant activities and restore normalcy in the region.
