Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh: A tragic incident unfolded on Tuesday during the ‘Nirvana Laddu Parv’ of Bhagwan Adinath, the first Tirthankara in Jainism, as a makeshift stage collapsed, resulting in the death of at least five people and leaving several others injured, including Jain disciples and police personnel.

The collapse triggered chaos and panic among the gathered devotees. Rescue operations commenced immediately to extricate those trapped under the debris, with authorities swiftly mobilizing resources to manage the situation.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his condolences and directed district authorities to provide prompt medical assistance to the injured. He extended his wishes for their speedy recovery.
Baghpat District Magistrate Asmita Lal and Superintendent of Police Arpit Vijayvargiya visited the district hospital to assess the condition of the injured. Confirming the death toll at five, DM Lal noted that two additional fatalities were suspected but remain unconfirmed. Approximately 40 people sustained injuries in the incident, although reports on the exact number vary.
Superintendent of Police Vijayvargiya provided details, stating, “A makeshift platform collapsed during the 'Laddu Mahotsav' program of the Jain community in Baraut. According to initial reports, 20-25 people were injured. Some had minor injuries and were discharged after first aid, while 2-3 individuals with serious injuries are receiving treatment at nearby hospitals.”
The incident has cast a pall of gloom over the Jain community and raised questions regarding the safety measures at such large gatherings. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the collapse while ensuring relief efforts for the affected families.
