Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin reaffirmed his government’s commitment to supporting the victim and ensuring legal justice in the alleged sexual assault case at Anna University. Addressing the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly during the winter session, Stalin criticized opposition parties for politicizing the incident, urging them to prioritize justice over political gains.
Government’s Swift Action
Highlighting the swift arrest of the accused, Stalin stated, “Members have mentioned the name of a university here. However, I don't want to name it or defame it, because it has contributed to all of us. With that sentiment, I am leaving the name aside. No one can accept what happened to a student in Chennai. Sexual assault on a student is cruel.”
He noted that legislators had raised the issue with genuine concern, except for one member, whom he accused of attempting to tarnish the government's image.
Condemnation of Politicization
Stalin strongly condemned the opposition’s approach, asserting that their actions undermined the victim’s cause. “The opposition asks, ‘Who is that, sir?’ If you really have evidence, please provide it to the SIT [Special Investigation Team] that is investigating the case. Don't indulge in cheap activities for short-term political benefits,” he said.
The Chief Minister emphasized his government’s stance on crimes against women, adding, “This government takes a strong stance against crimes committed against women. Some are trying to use this single incident to claim that women are unsafe, but this narrative will not resonate with the public.”
The Incident
The alleged sexual assault involved a second-year student at Anna University who reported being threatened and sexually assaulted on campus in December. Based on the student’s complaint, authorities arrested the accused and initiated an investigation.
Despite the government’s assurances, the opposition has continued to criticize the DMK government’s handling of the case. AIADMK MLAs, dressed in black shirts, staged protests in the assembly for the third consecutive day on Wednesday, pressing for accountability in the case. The protests followed dramatic scenes on the opening day of the winter session, with opposition parties staging demonstrations at the Secretariat over the issue.
While opposition parties accused the government of slow action, Stalin reiterated his government’s dedication to delivering justice swiftly and effectively. He called for unity in addressing crimes against women, emphasizing that political exploitation of such incidents detracts from the quest for justice.
As the investigation progresses, the government has assured the public of its unwavering support for the victim and its commitment to upholding women’s safety in the state.
