Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has labeled President-elect Donald Trump’s repeated comments about annexing Canada into the United States as a deliberate “distraction” from the contentious issue of proposed 25% tariffs on key imports.
In an interview with CNN on Thursday, Trudeau addressed Trump’s remarks, stating unequivocally that the notion of Canada becoming the 51st state of the U.S. is “not going to happen.” The comments come at a critical juncture, as Trudeau has announced his intention to step down as leader of his party and Prime Minister once his successor is chosen.
“President Trump, a very skillful negotiator, is using this kind of rhetoric to divert attention from the real issue—his plan to impose 25% tariffs on oil, gas, electricity, steel, aluminum, lumber, and concrete,” Trudeau remarked.
Trump has previously pledged to impose these sweeping tariffs on goods from Canada, Mexico, and China, starting from the first day of his administration. In a post on his Truth Social platform in November, Trump stated:
“On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% tariff on all products coming into the United States. This tariff will remain in effect until such time as drugs, particularly fentanyl, and illegal aliens stop this invasion of our country!”
Trudeau Warns of Economic Fallout
Trudeau cautioned that such tariffs, if implemented, would have significant repercussions for American businesses and consumers. “Everything American consumers buy from Canada will suddenly become a lot more expensive,” he noted, emphasizing the interconnected nature of trade between Canada, Mexico, China, and the United States.
“We Are Not American,” Trudeau Asserts
Addressing the broader context of Trump’s annexation comments, Trudeau reaffirmed Canada’s distinct national identity. “Canadians are incredibly proud of being Canadian,” he said. “One of the ways we define ourselves most easily is, well, we’re not American.”
Trudeau’s remarks underscore the diplomatic and economic complexities between the two nations as the incoming U.S. administration prepares to take office.
