Singh, who has long been a critical ally of the Liberals, has stated that Trudeau no longer deserves another term in office. “The NDP will vote to bring this government down and give Canadians a chance to vote for a government that will work for them,” Singh declared, signaling a significant shift in his party’s stance.
Growing Pressure from Quebec MPs
Pressure is also mounting from within Trudeau's own party. Members of the Liberal caucus from Quebec are reportedly urging Trudeau to step aside as leader. Stéphane Lauzon, chair of the Quebec caucus, confirmed that while no formal letter has been sent to the Prime Minister, discussions are ongoing. Lauzon remarked, "Unfortunately, what happens in the Quebec caucus stays in the caucus."
According to CBC News, several Quebec Liberal MPs have voiced concerns about Trudeau’s leadership. One MP shared that the consensus within the caucus is that Trudeau should step down. Alexandra Mendès, another Quebec MP, echoed this sentiment, saying that the caucus’s position has been communicated to the national caucus chair. “The prime minister should step away,” she stated.
Trudeau’s Defiant Response
In response to these mounting challenges, Trudeau remained resolute as he spoke in an end-of-year interview. “Right now, we’re in a moment where everything is difficult,” he said, referring to ongoing political and social challenges. “Pierre Poilievre is trying to convince Canadians not to believe in themselves, not to believe in climate change, not to believe in gun control, not to believe in women’s rights. I believe Canadians rise to the occasion, and I am certainly not going to stop fighting at this moment where it’s so important.”
With growing dissent both within his party and from opposition leaders, Trudeau’s ability to maintain control over the Liberal government is increasingly uncertain, as calls for leadership change intensify.
