Hamas has released a video of a 19-year-old Israeli soldier, Liri Albak, who has been held hostage for over a year following the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel.
Liri, a surveillance officer in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), was stationed at the Nahal Oz military base near the Gaza border when Hamas launched its assault. During the attack, 15 soldiers were killed, and Liri, along with six others, was abducted by Hamas fighters.
Liri Albag’s parents have one message for the world:

“We spoke with the prime minister, president, IDF chief of staff, and defense minister. We told them to make a deal. This is the time. There’s Liri and 99 other hostages who need to return home quickly.”

In the video, Liri speaks in Hebrew, expressing despair over her prolonged captivity. She accuses the Israeli government of forgetting her and the other hostages. "I am only 19 years old. My entire life is ahead of me, but for now, my life has been put on hold," she says with visible anguish.
Reacting to the video, Liri's family released a heartfelt statement, saying, "It has torn our hearts apart. This is not the daughter and sister we know. Her deep mental distress is painfully evident."
The family has made an emotional plea to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, urging him to secure Liri’s safe release. "It’s time to make decisions as if it were your own children," they implored.
Under mounting pressure from the families of hostages, Netanyahu responded by assuring the Albak family that the government is making relentless efforts to bring back the captives.
The October 2023 Hamas attack on Israel resulted in over 250 individuals being taken hostage to Gaza. Of them, 96 remain in captivity, while the IDF has confirmed the deaths of 34 hostages.
The release of Liri's video coincides with ongoing ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas, aimed at ending the 18-month-long Gaza conflict. These talks, facilitated by Qatar, resumed on Saturday, further highlighting the urgency of resolving the hostage crisis.
