An Post Announces Stamp Price Increase Amid Global Postal Trends

An Post has announced an upcoming 25-cent increase in the price of a standard stamp, bringing the cost to €1.65 from February 27. Business customers will see the revised pricing take effect from March 1. With the current rate at €1.40, this represents an 18% increase.

Justifying the adjustment, An Post emphasized that Irish postal rates remain below the European benchmark of €1.88. The company highlighted that rising costs and a global decline in letter volumes have driven similar increases in postal services worldwide.

Rising Costs and Declining Letter Volumes

The latest price adjustment follows a previous increase in February 2024, when stamp prices rose from €1.35 to €1.40, marking the fourth price hike in under three years. An Post reported that while letter volumes have fallen by 8% in the past year, 40% since 2017, and 50% over the past decade, parcel deliveries—driven by e-commerce—have helped sustain revenues.

An Post CEO David McRedmond reiterated the company’s commitment to maintaining a world-class postal service while navigating industry challenges. “We’ve worked hard to balance postage pricing through smarter work practices and cost reductions. This ensures our prices remain below both the European benchmark average and UK postal rates,” he stated.

McRedmond also emphasized An Post’s financial independence, noting that the company fully repaid a government loan in 2024 and is now self-financed. “While we manage the decline in traditional postal services, we are heavily investing in the rapidly growing parcel and e-commerce sectors,” he added.

International Comparisons and Discounts

An Post highlighted international postal trends, pointing to Denmark, where letter volumes have declined by 85% since 2008, resulting in a stamp price of €5.23.

The price of sending an international letter will rise from €2.20 to €2.65, while the equivalent cost in the UK is currently €3.34. Rates for large envelopes and parcels to international destinations will also increase, alongside a national digital stamp, which will rise from €2 to €2.22.

Support for Businesses and Care Homes

To ease the impact on businesses, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) will have access to discounted stamps at €1.55. Meanwhile, An Post will continue offering free delivery for letters and parcels (up to 1kg) sent to residents in nursing homes and care homes across the country.

The Shift Towards Business and Government Mail

An Post’s latest figures indicate that 93% of all letters originate from businesses or government bodies, while only 7% are personal letters or cards. As Ireland’s postal landscape evolves, An Post remains focused on maintaining service efficiency while adapting to changing communication trends.
