Kalpetta: The government is set to establish the first township for the rehabilitation of Chooralmala and Mundakai landslide victims at Elstone Estate in Kalpetta. As part of the initiative, the authorities have decided to proceed with the acquisition of Elstone Estate while temporarily excluding Nedumbala Estate, considering the number of beneficiaries and infrastructure requirements.
The Chief Minister has directed that all necessary procedures for acquiring Elstone Estate be completed within this month. The township, spanning 58 hectares, will see its foundation stone laid in March.
Following the devastating landslides, the government has already rehabilitated 813 families. In the initial phase, a list of 242 beneficiaries has been prepared. The final list will be compiled after considering those currently isolated in disaster-affected areas and individuals opting for the government's ₹15 lakh compensation package. The government has also issued directives to expedite the publication of this final beneficiary list.
With plans to commence construction immediately, the government is seeking additional time from the central administration for loan disbursement. Further discussions are underway with the Uralungal Labor Society to explore the possibility of reducing the construction cost, which currently stands at ₹25 lakh per unit.
To ensure efficient oversight, a 16-member coordination committee, led by the Chief Secretary, has been formed. This committee will be responsible for monitoring financial allocations, managing expenditures, and facilitating discussions with stakeholders, including donors and beneficiaries.
