Ambala (Haryana), February 16 – Haryana Minister Anil Vij has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic stampede at New Delhi Railway Station, extending his condolences to the families of the victims.
"The incident is heartbreaking. I offer my deepest condolences to the bereaved families who have lost their loved ones. The government has ordered a thorough investigation into the matter, and those found responsible will face strict action," Vij stated.
In response to the incident, the Delhi Police convened a high-level meeting to review the initial inquiry report and launched an inquest led by a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP). Additionally, a two-member High-Level Inquiry Committee has been constituted to oversee the investigation.
The stampede, which occurred on Saturday at approximately 10 p.m., resulted in the loss of 18 lives. The tragedy unfolded as a large number of devotees were traveling to Prayagraj for the Maha Kumbh 2025 festival, leading to extreme overcrowding at the station.
The victims have been identified as:
- Aaha Devi (79), Pinky Devi (41), Sheela Devi (50), Vyom (25), Poonam Devi (40), Lalita Devi (35), Suruchi (11), Krishna Devi (40), Vijay Sah (15), Neeraj (12), Shanti Devi (40), Pooja Kumar (8), Sangeeta Malik (34), Poonam (34), Mamta Jha (40), Riya Singh (7), Baby Kumari (24), and Manoj (47).
The Indian Railways has announced financial assistance for the affected families. A compensation of ₹10 lakh will be provided to the next of kin of the deceased, while ₹2.5 lakh has been allocated for those seriously injured and ₹1 lakh for individuals with minor injuries.
According to a statement by the Northern Railway Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) to ANI, the incident was triggered when a passenger lost balance and slipped on the stairs leading to platforms 14 and 15, causing a cascading effect that resulted in multiple injuries and fatalities.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragedy, with efforts underway to implement measures ensuring passenger safety and preventing such incidents in the future.
