Legal Complaint Filed Against Sonia Gandhi Over 'Poor Thing' Remark on President Murmu

A complaint has been filed against Congress leader Sonia Gandhi in a court in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district over her recent remark referring to President Droupadi Murmu as a “poor thing.” The complaint, lodged on Saturday by Muzaffarpur-based advocate Sudhir Ojha, seeks the registration of an FIR against Gandhi, alleging that her comment constitutes disrespect toward the country’s highest constitutional authority.

In addition to Sonia Gandhi, Ojha has named Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as co-accused, calling for legal action against them as well. Speaking to the media, Ojha asserted that the remarks amounted to an insult to the President and warranted legal proceedings under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The matter is scheduled for a hearing before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court in Muzaffarpur on February 10.

The controversy stems from Sonia Gandhi’s remarks following President Murmu’s joint address to Parliament ahead of the Budget session. When asked by reporters outside Parliament about the nearly hour-long speech, Gandhi was recorded saying, “The President was getting very tired by the end… she could hardly speak, poor thing.” Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi was heard describing the speech as “boring,” with Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also present at the time.

In response, Rashtrapati Bhavan issued a strongly worded statement condemning the remarks without naming Sonia Gandhi directly. “While reacting to the media on the Hon’ble President’s address to Parliament, some prominent leaders of the Congress party have made comments that clearly hurt the dignity of the high office, and therefore are unacceptable,” the statement read. It also clarified that President Murmu was not fatigued, countering the claim made by the Congress leader.

The incident has sparked a political controversy, with opposition leaders criticizing the remarks and calling for accountability. The legal proceedings in Muzaffarpur are expected to draw further attention as the case progresses.
