Imphal, Manipur [India], February 10: In the wake of Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh’s resignation, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Y Khemchand Singh reaffirmed that all party members would adhere to the decision of the BJP’s central leadership.
Singh emphasized that the primary focus remains on restoring normalcy in the state, particularly in addressing tensions between the Meitei and Kuki communities.
“We accept the decision taken by the party high command. The issue is resolved, but our immediate concern is how to bring back stability and peace. As per the party’s system, whatever the high command decides, we must accept. All members will abide by the party’s decision,” Singh told ANI when asked about Singh’s successor.
NPP Withdraws Support Over Leadership Concerns
Meanwhile, Sheikh Noorul Hassan, the Working President of the National People's Party (NPP), stated that the party withdrew support from Biren Singh’s government due to his inability to restore peace and stability in Manipur. However, he reaffirmed NPP’s commitment to the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
“We withdrew support from the N. Biren Singh-led government as we lost confidence in his leadership, given his failure to restore normalcy in the state. However, his resignation is a welcome step toward peace. While we remain part of the NDA alliance at the Centre, we will continue to work with the BJP to bring stability to Manipur,” Hassan told reporters.
Biren Singh’s Resignation Marks a Political Shift
On Sunday, February 9, CM Biren Singh formally submitted his resignation to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at Raj Bhavan, marking the end of his tenure nearly two years after ethnic violence escalated in the state.
Singh was accompanied by BJP Manipur President A Sharda, BJP North East Manipur in-charge Sambit Patra, and at least 19 BJP MLAs during the resignation process.
In his resignation letter, Singh expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve the people of Manipur.
"It has been an honor to serve the people of Manipur," Singh stated.
He further thanked the Central Government for its interventions, developmental efforts, and timely initiatives aimed at protecting the interests of the people of Manipur.
Background of the Unrest
The ethnic conflict between the Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur was triggered on May 3, 2023, following a rally by the All Tribal Students Union of Manipur (ATSUM). The protest came in response to a Manipur High Court directive urging the state government to consider the inclusion of the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribes (ST) list.
With Singh’s resignation, political analysts anticipate a renewed focus on efforts to restore law and order in the region while addressing underlying ethnic tensions.
