Bhagalpur, Bihar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a scathing attack on Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav on Monday over his remark calling the Maha Kumbh “meaningless.” Addressing a rally in Bhagalpur while releasing the 19th installment of the PM-KISAN scheme, Modi accused the opposition of harboring hatred towards India’s religious and cultural traditions.
“The Maha Kumbh, a grand festival of faith and unity, is currently taking place in Prayagraj. The NDA government is committed to preserving India’s glorious heritage and shaping a prosperous future. However, those who support ‘Jungle Raj’ despise our traditions and beliefs,” Modi asserted.
The Prime Minister highlighted the overwhelming number of devotees participating in the holy dip at the Triveni Sangam, emphasizing its significance. “More people have bathed in this Maha Kumbh than the entire population of Europe, yet those who promote anarchy and lawlessness are belittling this sacred event,” he stated.
Modi also linked the opposition’s criticism of Maha Kumbh to their earlier opposition to the Ram Temple. “The same people who were troubled by the construction of the Ram Temple are now targeting the Maha Kumbh. I know Bihar will never forgive those who disrespect our traditions,” he declared.
Lalu’s Controversial Remark on Maha Kumbh
Lalu Prasad Yadav’s remark came in response to the tragic stampede at New Delhi Railway Station earlier this month. “The Kumbh has no meaning… It is just meaningless,” the RJD chief had said, drawing fierce backlash from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which accused him of indulging in “appeasement politics.”
Several other opposition leaders have also been critical of the ongoing Maha Kumbh. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee termed it “Mrityu Kumbh” (Kumbh of Death), while Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav alleged that the Uttar Pradesh government fabricated the term “Maha Kumbh” as a means to squander public funds. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also questioned whether taking a dip in the Sangam would absolve one’s sins.
With the Maha Kumbh continuing to draw millions of pilgrims, the controversy surrounding it underscores the deep political and ideological divide between the ruling BJP and the opposition parties.
