Trump Threatens to Cut U.S. Aid to South Africa Over Alleged Land Confiscation and Discrimination

U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that he would halt U.S. funding to South Africa, citing concerns over alleged land confiscations and the mistreatment of certain groups in the country.

"South Africa is confiscating land and treating certain classes of people VERY BADLY," Trump stated in a post on Truth Social. "The United States won't stand for it, we will act. Also, I will be cutting off all future funding to South Africa until a full investigation of this situation has been completed!"

Trump did not provide evidence to support his claims, and it remains unclear what prompted his remarks. The South African embassy in Washington, D.C., did not respond to requests for comment outside of regular business hours.

According to the latest U.S. government data, the United States allocated nearly $440 million in assistance to South Africa in 2023. South Africa currently holds the G20 presidency, with the U.S. set to assume leadership next.

Last month, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa downplayed concerns about his country's relationship with Trump, stating that he had spoken with the U.S. leader following his election victory and looked forward to future cooperation.

During his first term in office, Trump had called for an investigation into alleged large-scale killings of white farmers and violent land takeovers in South Africa—claims that the South African government dismissed as misinformation. It remains unclear whether any formal investigation was conducted by the Trump administration.

Trump’s comments echo previous concerns raised by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, a South Africa-born U.S. citizen. In 2023, Musk responded to a video on X (formerly Twitter) featuring members of a far-left South African political party singing the anti-apartheid song Kill the Boer by stating: "They are openly pushing for genocide of white people in South Africa."

Trump’s remarks are likely to further strain diplomatic relations between the U.S. and South Africa, particularly as the latter navigates its G20 leadership and broader geopolitical alignments.
