Lucknow: In a concerted effort to curb misinformation, the Uttar Pradesh government has identified and taken action against 14 accounts on social media platform X for allegedly disseminating misleading content related to Maha Kumbh 2025, an official statement confirmed on Sunday.
The move follows heightened scrutiny of social media platforms under the directive of Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) Prashant Kumar. "The state government remains committed to proactively monitoring social media to prevent the spread of misleading narratives, particularly concerning large-scale events such as the Maha Kumbh," the statement read.
Misinformation Campaign Uncovered
Authorities flagged a widely circulated video, originally from Dhanbad, Jharkhand, which was falsely linked to the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj. The video, depicting a lathi-charge incident involving Jharkhand police on January 1, 2025, was misrepresented online as an incident involving Uttar Pradesh police allegedly assaulting devotees searching for missing relatives at the Maha Kumbh.
Upon investigation, officials confirmed the video's actual origin and dismissed the false claims. The Kumbh Mela Police also issued clarifications through their official social media handles.
"The dissemination of this misleading content was a deliberate attempt to malign the state government and its law enforcement agencies while inciting public unrest," the statement added.
Legal Action Initiated
Following the investigation, authorities have filed an FIR at Kotwali Kumbh Mela police station against the 14 identified X accounts. Legal proceedings are now underway.
The administration has also issued a stern warning, stating that individuals or entities found responsible for spreading false or misleading information about Maha Kumbh 2025 will face strict legal consequences.
