Ireland: young girl who sustained severe injuries in a knife attack on Dublin’s Parnell Square has stood up for the first time since the incident, her family has reported.
In an update shared via a GoFundMe page, the family described her progress as “remarkable.”
The attack, which occurred on November 23, 2023, left two other children and a crèche worker injured. The girl, now six years old, was just five at the time and spent several weeks in paediatric intensive care due to the severity of her injuries.
Providing an update on her condition, the family expressed hope and gratitude:
“We have been home since the end of November, and her recovery has been significant. Yesterday marked a major milestone—our little girl stood up for the first time. With the support of two physiotherapists, she placed both feet on the ground and stood tall. The physiotherapists noted that she was able to bear weight on her legs, a promising sign for her rehabilitation.”
The family further shared that she has also shown improvements in arm and hand movements, neck control, and back strength.
“Being by her side every day has been incredibly rewarding. It is a full-time commitment, even with assistance, but this is what is required right now. We remain dedicated to her recovery and will continue pushing forward.”
Legal Proceedings
The attack sparked riots in Dublin city centre, highlighting broader concerns over public safety.
A suspect, Riad Bouchaker, 50, of no fixed address, has been charged in connection with the incident. He faces multiple charges, including attempted murder of two girls and a boy, as well as assault causing serious harm to the crèche worker. Additionally, he has been charged with three counts of assault causing harm and possession of a 36cm kitchen knife.
Bouchaker has appeared before a Dublin court, and legal proceedings are ongoing.
