Bareilly (Uttar Pradesh) [India], March 31: A 45-year-old woman was allegedly abducted and gang-raped by five unidentified men before being shot and critically injured at an isolated location in Bareilly district on Saturday evening, police confirmed on Sunday.
According to officials, the perpetrators later abandoned the victim near Gandhi Udyan and fled the scene. The incident occurred when the woman, a divorcee, had gone to the market for personal errands.
Superintendent of Police (City) Manush Pareek stated that authorities were alerted to the shooting around 8 p.m. A police team promptly responded, and Inspector Amit Pandey of Kotwali Police ensured the victim was admitted to the district hospital. She sustained a gunshot wound to the upper right rib cage. Senior officials, including SP City Manush Pareek and DSP City, later visited the hospital and recorded the victim's statement.
An FIR has been registered at Kotwali police station under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, including Section 140(1) (kidnapping with intent to murder), Section 70(1) (gang rape), Section 109 (attempt to murder), and Section 309(4) (robbery).
As per the FIR, filed on the complaint of the victim’s niece, five unidentified men abducted the woman in a black car. She was allegedly gang-raped by three of the accused inside the vehicle, after which they robbed her of her jewelry, including a chain and earrings, before shooting her.
"The victim's condition is stable, and she is out of danger. While efforts were made to record her detailed statement, she has been unable to provide substantial information at this stage," SP City Manush Pareek said.
Law enforcement officials have initiated an extensive investigation, including the examination of CCTV footage from the area, to identify and apprehend the perpetrators. "We are thoroughly investigating the motive behind the crime and are committed to ensuring swift justice for the victim," Pareek added.
