Letterkenny, March 17, 2025 – A tragic accident in Letterkenny, Co Donegal, in the early hours of St. Patrick’s Day has claimed the life of one man and left his brother in critical condition.
Anthony Gallagher

Anthony and Martin Gallagher, both in their 60s, were returning home from an evening out when they were struck by a runaway taxi on Lower Main Street just before 3 a.m. The vehicle, driven by a teenager, reportedly lost control, crossed a roundabout, and struck the two men before crashing into the front of a nearby house, causing structural damage.
Emergency responders swiftly transported the victims to Letterkenny University Hospital. Despite urgent medical intervention, Anthony Gallagher succumbed to his injuries. His brother, Martin Gallagher, has since been transferred to Galway University Hospital, where he remains in serious condition.
A Well-Known Figure in the Community
The Gallagher brothers, lifelong residents of Charlie Daly Terrace, were well known in the local community. Anthony Gallagher, in particular, was a familiar face in the town, working as a school crossing guard—a role he performed just 50 yards from the scene of the accident.
Investigation Underway
Gardaí have confirmed that the driver, a young man, was arrested at the scene and is currently being questioned at Letterkenny Garda Station. Authorities have sealed off the area, and a forensic team has conducted a detailed examination of the crash site.
The vehicle involved, a Skoda Octavia estate taxi, is registered to a local driver. Investigators are now focusing on how the teenager gained access to the vehicle.
The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) has been notified of the incident due to a prior interaction between the driver and Gardaí before the collision.
Appeal for Witnesses
Authorities are urging witnesses or anyone with dash-cam footage from the area between 2:30 a.m. and 3:30 a.m.—particularly between Dry Arch Roundabout and Oldtown Road—to come forward.

Community in Mourning
In light of the tragedy, Letterkenny’s St. Patrick’s Day parade was canceled as a mark of respect. Councillor Gerry McMonagle, Cathaoirleach of Letterkenny and Milford Municipal District, expressed the town’s deep sorrow:
“This was meant to be a day of celebration, a day to honor our heritage. Instead, we are struggling to come to terms with this terrible loss. These men were cherished members of our community, and it is still hard to comprehend what has happened.”
A candlelit vigil is scheduled for 8 p.m. this evening at the crash site, where the local community will gather to pay tribute to the Gallagher brothers.
