Canada’s PM Mark Carney Sends Strong Message to Trump in European Visit

London, March 18, 2025 – In a clear departure from tradition, Canada’s newly elected Prime Minister Mark Carney chose to visit Europe on his first official foreign trip, bypassing Washington. This move underscores growing tensions between Canada and the United States under President Donald Trump’s administration.

Carney's trip included meetings with French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, reinforcing Canada’s deepening ties with Europe. Speaking in London, Carney made it clear that Canada would not be intimidated by recent comments from Trump suggesting Canada should be considered the "51st state."

Firm Response to Trump’s Remarks

Addressing the media, Carney did not hold back in his criticism of Trump’s rhetoric. "Those comments are disrespectful and not helpful," he stated. "They need to stop before we can have a broader discussion about our partnership with the United States."

While some allied nations have been hesitant to challenge Trump directly, Carney asserted Canada’s independence: "We can stand up for ourselves. We don’t need others to come to our aid."

Trade and Defense Diversification

Carney also addressed concerns about economic and trade policies, emphasizing that uncertainty over U.S. trade actions, including tariffs, is harming both Canada and the U.S. itself. He outlined a strategy to strengthen Canada’s economy by unifying its domestic markets, increasing housing construction, and expanding trade relations beyond North America.

A key point of discussion during Carney’s meetings was Canada’s defense strategy. Traditionally reliant on the U.S. for military procurement, Canada is now exploring European alternatives. Carney hinted at a potential reassessment of Canada’s contract with Lockheed Martin for 88 F-35 fighter jets, with Sweden emerging as a possible supplier.

"We are actively exploring partnerships with European allies to ensure our defense procurement is diversified," Carney said. "This aligns with the broader rearmament efforts within Europe, which Canada has a vested interest in."

Strengthening Canada-Europe Relations

Carney’s visit to France and the UK was also significant in the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine. He affirmed Canada’s commitment to European-led defense initiatives, positioning the country as "the most European of non-European nations."

The visit marks a strategic pivot in Canada’s foreign policy, reinforcing alliances with Europe amid tensions with the U.S. "We are willing to sit down with the United States," Carney said, "but only once Washington starts showing us some respect."

As Carney continues to navigate Canada’s place on the global stage, his decisive stance signals a new era in Canada-U.S. relations—one where Ottawa is prepared to chart its own course, even if it means stepping away from its historically closest ally.
