Fashion Show in Gulmarg Sparks Political Uproar Amid Ramzan

A fashion show held in Gulmarg, a renowned winter tourist destination, has ignited a political storm, drawing sharp criticism for its timing during the holy month of Ramzan. The controversy has prompted Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to seek an official report, while the state assembly witnessed heated debates between the Opposition and treasury benches over the issue.

The event, reportedly featuring a ski wear collection, took place on March 7 as part of a prominent ski festival. However, the circulation of images from the show on social media has led to widespread backlash, particularly in light of the ongoing fasting month observed by Muslims.

Political Reactions and Public Outrage

People's Democratic Party (PDP) leader and former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti strongly condemned the event, describing it as “deeply troubling.” Taking to social media platform X, she expressed outrage over what she termed as “vulgar images” from the fashion show.

“The fact that such an event, which descended into an indecent spectacle, was permitted during the sacred month of Ramzan is nothing short of shocking. It is deplorable that private hoteliers are allowed to promote such vulgarity, blatantly contradicting our cultural values,” Mufti stated on Monday. She further asserted that the government could not absolve itself of responsibility by labeling the event a private affair, warning that unchecked permissiveness could have long-term cultural consequences.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, in response to the public outcry, announced that an official report would be submitted to him within 24 hours, after which appropriate action would be taken.

Religious Leaders Condemn the Event

Prominent religious leader and Kashmir’s chief priest, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, also denounced the fashion show, calling it an affront to the region’s deeply ingrained religious and cultural traditions.

“Outrageous! That in the holy month of Ramzan, an obscene fashion show was organized in Gulmarg, with pictures and videos going viral, sparking shock and anger among people,” Farooq posted on X. He emphasized that such acts were incompatible with the valley’s Sufi heritage and the religious sentiments of its people.

Farooq further demanded immediate accountability from those responsible for organizing the event, stating that “obscenity in the name of tourism promotion will not be tolerated in Kashmir.”

Government Response and Future Action

Reacting to Farooq’s post, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah acknowledged the widespread outrage, stating that the images he had seen showed “a complete disregard for local sensitivities, especially during this holy month.”

“My office has been in touch with local authorities, and I have requested a report to be submitted within the next 24 hours. Further action, as appropriate, will follow,” Abdullah affirmed.

The incident has reignited debates over the intersection of tourism, cultural preservation, and religious sensitivities in the region. As the administration deliberates on its course of action, the controversy continues to fuel political and public discourse.
