A fierce confrontation erupted in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday after Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge made remarks that sparked strong objections from BJP leaders. The ruling party accused Kharge of using inappropriate language against the Speaker and demanded a formal apology.
Tensions Flare Over NEP Discussion
The controversy unfolded during discussions on the National Education Policy (NEP) when Kharge raised concerns over the education minister’s absence in the morning session and requested another opportunity to speak. However, the Chair denied his request.
As Kharge continued his speech, the Speaker attempted to intervene, prompting visible frustration from the Congress president. BJP national president J.P. Nadda swiftly condemned his remarks, stating, "It is very unfortunate that the Leader of the Opposition is using such language for the Chair."
"This Is Dictatorship," Says Kharge, Triggering BJP's Ire
The situation escalated further when Kharge, upset over being interrupted, declared, "This is dictatorship," insisting that he be allowed to continue since he had prepared his speech. His comment drew immediate and sharp criticism from BJP lawmakers, who deemed it disrespectful.
Nadda called on the Speaker to denounce Kharge’s remarks and insisted that the Leader of the Opposition issue a formal apology.
Kharge Attempts to Clarify, BJP Insists on Full Apology
In an attempt to defuse the tension, Kharge later clarified, saying, "I apologize for my comments… My remarks were directed at the government’s policies, not the Speaker. I apologize to you, but not to the government."
Despite this clarification, BJP leaders remained firm in their stance, arguing that Kharge’s language was unacceptable.
"The language he used and the aspersions he cast on the Chair are unacceptable. He should issue a full apology," Nadda reiterated, keeping the demand for an unequivocal apology at the forefront of the debate.
