The sixth edition of the India-Japan joint military exercise, Dharma Guardian, concluded successfully at the East Fuji Training Area in Japan, marking a significant milestone in bilateral defence cooperation. According to a statement by the Indian Army, this year's exercise, held from February 24 to March 9, was conducted on an expanded scale, featuring company-strength troop participation.
The closing ceremony was attended by Lieutenant General Toriumi Seiji, Commanding General of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) 1st Division, who commended the participating troops for achieving all exercise objectives. He highlighted the joint training's role in enhancing operational readiness and reinforcing the India-Japan defence partnership. General Toriumi further emphasised that the exercise fostered greater cooperation and mutual understanding between the armed forces of both nations.
Strategic Focus and Key Activities
This year’s Dharma Guardian primarily focused on counter-terrorism operations in urban environments, a critical area of collaboration between India and Japan. The exercise also incorporated elements of United Nations peacekeeping operations, including Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) scenarios. Troops engaged in tactical drills, knowledge-sharing sessions, and joint operational rehearsals, strengthening interoperability and forging deeper bonds of trust.
Adding to the cultural exchange, the Indian contingent organised a Yoga session, a demonstration of Kalaripayattu, and a display of Japanese martial arts by JGSDF troops, fostering camaraderie beyond the battlefield.
Operational Validation and Conclusion
The exercise culminated in a 72-hour validation phase, where troops executed a simulated joint counter-terrorism operation in an urban setting. The operation integrated heli-borne insertion, slithering techniques, and tactical storming maneuvers, demonstrating high operational proficiency and coordination.
The successful execution of Dharma Guardian 2025 reaffirmed the shared commitment of India and Japan to regional peace, security, and stability. It underscored the growing defence partnership between the two nations, paving the way for deeper strategic cooperation in the future.
