"Offends the Sentiments of the Japanese People": Tokyo Slams Putin’s Landmark Visit to Disputed Kuril Islands ​TOKYO / MOSCOW — Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has issued a fierce rebuke of Russian President Vladimir Putin, condemning his historic visit to the disputed Kuril archipelago as "absolutely unacceptable." ​Marking his first-ever official trip to the Pacific island chain—known in Japan as the Northern Territories and in Russia as the Kurils—Putin traveled Thursday to Iturup (called Etorofu in Japan), the southernmost island of the strategically vital territory. During the unannounced visit, the Russian leader toured local infrastructure, including a fish-processing complex, a hospital, and a school, alongside regional officials. ​Prime Minister Takaichi swiftly denounced the high-profile tour, stating that it severely violates Japan's historic territorial sovereignty and deeply offends national sentiments. ​"The Northern Territories are an inherent part of Japan's territory, both historically and under international law," Takaichi told reporters in Tokyo, warning that the provocative trip has "made it more difficult to restore relations in the medium to long term." The Japanese government has formally lodged strong diplomatic protests through official channels, demanding that Moscow address Tokyo's grievances. ​Decades-Old Territorial Rift ​The chain of volcanic islands was seized by the Soviet Union in the closing days of World War II. The unresolved sovereignty dispute over the four southernmost islands has prevented Tokyo and Moscow from ever signing a formal post-war peace treaty. ​Bilateral friction has intensified sharply in recent years. Diplomatic channels have remained effectively frozen since Tokyo joined its G7 allies in imposing sweeping economic and political sanctions against Moscow in response to the war in Ukraine. ​Prior to his arrival on Iturup, Putin stopped at neighboring Sakhalin Island to inspect Russian naval drills and chair a briefing on securing Russia's eastern borders. While lower-level Russian ministers have occasionally visited the contested chain, analysts view Putin’s direct, in-person appearance on the disputed soil as a calculated geopolitical signal amid an era of historically low relations between the two neighbors.
