At least five individuals have been killed following Israeli shelling in Syria’s southern province of Daraa, local authorities confirmed.
Earlier, reports indicated that the Israeli military had launched strikes on the Syrian airbases of Tadmur and T-4. No casualties were immediately reported from those attacks.
Israel has stated that its strikes target military installations linked to Iranian forces and Lebanon’s Hezbollah, both of which have been key allies of Syria’s former government.
Meanwhile, European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, during her visit to Jerusalem on Monday, cautioned that Israeli airstrikes on Syria and Lebanon posed a significant risk of escalating regional tensions.
“Military actions must be proportionate, and Israeli strikes into Syria and Lebanon risk further escalation,” Kallas said at a joint press conference with Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar.
Following the fall of the Assad regime last year, Israel’s air force has conducted numerous airstrikes against weapons depots, naval bases, and Syrian military infrastructure. Israeli officials have maintained that these operations are aimed at preventing military assets from falling into rebel hands.
Kallas, however, criticized the ongoing strikes, stating that they were “unnecessary because Syria is not currently attacking Israel, and such actions contribute to further radicalization, which ultimately threatens Israel’s security.”
