Kolkata, March [Date]: A political storm has erupted in West Bengal following the filing of an FIR against State Education Minister Bratya Basu, his driver, and TMC leader Om Prakash Mishra in connection with the recent violent clashes at Jadavpur University. The complaint was lodged by a student who alleged that the minister’s car deliberately hit him during a confrontation on campus, leading to his hospitalization.
Reacting to the FIR, Om Prakash Mishra, who is both a Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and a professor at the university, dismissed the allegations and criticized the student who filed the complaint. Speaking to ANI, Mishra stated, “There are several cases in which 48 individuals have been named. In response, legal action has been taken against those who were actually attacked, including the Education Minister and myself. The gathering comprised 3,500 academicians and professors, yet it was disrupted by individuals masquerading as students.”
Mishra further alleged that the student behind the complaint harbors strong political biases and holds both anti-Modi and anti-Mamata views. “This student, I am told, has studied in multiple institutions yet remains in BA first year. He is vocal in his opposition to both the BJP and the TMC while openly supporting leftist ideologies,” he added.
The clashes erupted when student organizations staged protests demanding immediate elections for the university’s students' council. According to reports, as Minister Basu attempted to leave the campus amid mounting demonstrations, his vehicle was allegedly obstructed by protestors. Two students later claimed that the minister’s car struck them intentionally, causing serious injuries that required hospitalization.
The incident has since taken a legal turn, with the Calcutta High Court directing the registration of a case against the state minister. In an order issued by Justice Tirthankar Ghosh, the court has demanded a detailed report on the episode by March [date], further intensifying scrutiny over the state government's handling of the situation.
With both political and academic circles closely watching the developments, the case has deepened the ideological divide at Jadavpur University, a campus long known for its history of student activism and left-leaning discourse.
